Compensation for victims of crime is available to victims of violent crime via Victims Services. Victims Compensation in NSW can be paid to eligible Family Members for whom a claim is made totalling a maximum of $50 000 between them. In cases of homicide, the funeral costs are paid, and the remainder is divided amongst eligible members with the emphasis on providing for minor children where they exist. Compensation cannot be paid unless the victim died as a result of an act of violence, and can be reduced if the victim was said to have contributed to their own death. A family of a person who has been murdered by a motor vehicle is not eligible for Victims Compensation in NSW as it is classified as a vehicle injury, not a personal injury.
